Abstract

The author reviewed the cases of 22 patients with thalamic hemorrhage who were seen at the Chungnam National University Hospital between 1985 and 1987. The analysis was based on clinical-CT correlations. The age of the patients ranged from 35 years to 83 years(mean : 57 years). Sixteen(73%) were hypertensive. The size of hematoma was less than 10mm in 2 patients, 10-30mm in 14 patients ana larger than 30mm in 6 patients. Impaired consciousness was observed in 77%. The prognosis seemed to be inversely proportional to the size of hematoma and the severity of consciousness impairment. Miosis with or without sluggish light reflex occurred in 6 patients and gaze preference in 4. Visual field defect was observed in 1 patient. Hemiparesis was associated in 95% of patients and hemisensory defect was confirmed in 13 patients among the 17 patients tested. Dysphasia and dysarthria occurred in 3 and 5 patients respectively.
